Welcome back

Janine welcomes listeners back and introduces the topic for this week’s discussion – Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road. She also highlights some of her favourite aspects of the movie and lists it as one of her top 5.

Old Mad Max movies

Janine first recaps some of the older Mad Max movies and some of her favourite moments from them. She also reminisces about how her dad always showed her violent movies as a child.

Janine briefly explores what Max was like in the first three movies. She also mentions Tina Turner’s character in the third Mad Max movie and how she is represented.

Fury Road’s difference

Janine then explores how Fury Road is different from the older Mad Max movies. She highlights a few key points from the old movies and the new one.

Max and Furiosa

The next topic Janine explores is the gender dynamic between Max and Furiosa. Janine highlights their camaraderie, their lack of romance, and how they can be seen as one person.

Throughout Janine refers to some things different theorists said about Max and Furiosa’s relationship. She also mentions what this relationship reveals about the current state of feminism.

Furiosa’s representation

Janine goes on to discuss how Furiosa is tomboyish, desexualized and how she blends in with the apocalypse. She then links this to other contemporary heroines in pop culture.

Furiosa and the birth mothers

Janine contrasts Furiosa and the birth mothers. She explores the interesting relationship and contrasts between Furiosa and the birth mothers.

Janine chats about how the birth mothers ironically present a critique of beauty culture. She also mentions how Furiosa as a heroine is then represented as the saviour of womankind.

The Many Mothers

Janine finally explores Furiosa’s main quest – to find the Many Mothers. She explains how the Many Mothers present the salvation of humanity.

Janine also links them back to second-wave feminism and the current state of feminism. She suggests that the Many Mothers could metaphorically refer to second-wave feminists.
