What to expect from episode 17: Review of Web of the Romulans by M.S. Murdock?

Intro

Kavura and Jen give a summary of the book Star Trek: The Original Series: Web of the Romulans, novel #10, originally published in 1983.

A deadly virus causes desperate Romulans to invade Canara and incite a battle with the USS Enterprise. Captain James T. Kirk, fully willing to get the antidote to the Romulans, has to deal with the ship’s central computer, which has developed romantic feelings for him.

Romulan Culture

The author fleshed out the Romulans much more than they had been on TOS. The Trek ladies discuss how the author, M.S. Murdock, developed the Romulan culture and how it compares to the Romulans onscreen and in other Trek novels.

New Characters

They discuss the new characters, such as S’Talon, the Romulan commander. The book had many new Romulan and Starfleet characters. All of them seemed to be vibrant with their own distinctive characteristics. The Romulan characters had their personal and political ambitions dealing with family, friends, and enemies, while the Starfleet characters were just as driven and ambitious.

Main and Other Characters

They discuss how well the main characters are treated, especially Kirk and how he dealt with the amorous Enterprise computer. There were also some great scenes with some “lower decks” characters. The author really does write humor well.

The Best and the Worst

Exactly how entertaining was the Enterprise’s amorous computer? Was that part taken a little too far? What were some other high points and low points of the story? The Trek ladies discuss it all, from the politics of the staunch Starfleet leaders to the complicated Romulan politics to the cute scenes and the serious scenes on the ship, space stations, and planets.

Closing Thoughts

They discuss their overall opinion of the story and how M.S. Murdock, a woman who started out as a fanfiction writer, took her first and only step as a professional Star Trek novelist.
